Garlic

Allium sativum

People often ask what is the most powerful medicinal herb we grow in the gardens, and they are sometimes surprised when we say ‘garlic!’ Powerful against infection as well as nourishing, most people know how to use garlic.

Single cloves are planted around 4-5 inches deep, 7-8 inches apart, between Halloween and Thanksgiving. They come up in neat little rows in the early spring, when it’s too early to do any real gardening, a satisfying sight. The flower stalks, called scapes, are cut off in July to help the bulb grow bigger – they’re great cooked like asparagus or made into pesto.
